Hurray for Frozen Seafood!

My family LOVES seafood and it seems like I am constantly going to the grocery store to purchase seafood for dinner.  I keep frozen shrimp at home and pondered if I could get any other type of seafood frozen and thaw at home as I would shrimp? To my surprise there is a LOT of seafood you can get frozen, you just have to ask for it!  What you need to do is look at the labels they have under the description of the seafood and it will tell you either fresh or previously frozen.  Anything that has been previously frozen, ask them if you can get a bag of it or tell them the amount you want.  Take it home, keep it frozen in the freezer, thaw it when ready to create a meal and you have a seafood meal without the hassle of going to the grocery store! The other good thing about getting it frozen and thawing at home vs. purchasing previously frozen seafood at the grocery store is you know it was thawed a couple of hours ago or that day and at the grocery store you have no idea how long the previously frozen seafood has been sitting there thawed.  One thing to keep in mind when purchasing frozen seafood is to look at the ingredients label.  Sometimes they have questionable preservatives, but a lot of times none and that is best. One tip is only purchase seafood that has been previously frozen and keep it frozen until you are ready to thaw and use it and that anything alive cannot be frozen. Clams and mussels are alive and should not be frozen.

Some of the seafood I get frozen and thaw at home include tilapia, tuna, sea scallops, snow crab clusters, Dungeness crab clusters, king crab legs, calamari and of course shrimp.  Create your own seafood meal, try some of mine listed below and/or check out my recipe collection in the Fish & Shellfish section.
